Autumn on the Veluwe, our tips!
Autumn on the Veluwe is the most enchanting time of the year. As summer slowly gives way to cooler temperatures and shorter days, this beautiful natural area undergoes a breathtaking transformation. The Veluwe forests are enveloped in a rich patchwork of warm autumn colors. Leaves change from green to shades of red, orange, and yellow, swirling gently down to the moss-covered forest floor. And to enjoy all this beauty extra, we share our tips below!
Hiking through the beautifully colored forests
The Veluwe offers an array of hiking trails, ranging from winding forest paths and vast heathlands. Wonderful to then take a long walk through the beautifully colored forests.
During your walk, you can enjoy all the beautiful autumn colors and there is even a chance of spotting wildlife, such as red deer and wild boar, as they prepare for the coming winter.
A visit to Landgoed Schovenhorst in Putten is highly recommended. At this estate, you will discover five tree gardens with centuries-old trees shining in the beautiful colors of autumn. TIP: Dare to climb to the 40-metre-high forest tower for a breathtaking view over the Veluwe.
Or walk through one of the oldest continuous forests in the Netherlands, the Speulder- en Sprielderbos, and after that enjoy a delicious piece of apple pie at Boshuis Drie.

Wildlife spotting
Autumn is the mating season for red deer and wild boar, so you are likely to encounter deer with imposing antlers or curious boars with their young.
Make sure you set out early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the animals are most active. Good binoculars and patience are your best companions as you explore the Veluwe in search of wildlife.
In the Speulderbos, located near Ermelo, you will find Wildarena de Witte Hoogt. Located in the middle of a wildlife sanctuary, this location offers an ideal opportunity to observe wildlife. From the covered wildlife observation post, located deep in the forest, you have a clear view of a clearing where red deer, roe deer, and wild boar regularly show themselves at close range. This wildlife arena can only be visited with a guide from the Forestry Commission, click here for more information.
